Combining more than 30 years as a professional private practice educator with unique expertise in one-on-one communication and specialized coaching skills honed during more than 20,000 instructional sessions, Chris Borland is one of the most experienced and widely respected academic coaches in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Specializing in standardized test preparation, mathematics (arithmetic through calculus), and general academic and learning skills, Chris brings a genuine love of learning and a total commitment to his work that is rare and infectious.

He agrees wholeheartedly with the belief held by Socrates that "all learning is remembering," that curiosity and wonder are natural to people, and that, with sufficient inspiration, commitment, and support, all students can be successful learners.

Known for his special ability to motivate his students to pursue their personal best in and out of school, inspire and instill confidence and pride in their own abilities and accomplishments, and train skills necessary to achieve real competence and lasting success, Chris has a knack for accurately assessing the specific needs of individual students, developing and implementing comprehensive plans to effectively address these needs, and conveying academic information and content in a way that is at once clear, complete, and engaging.

In his blog,
Borland Educational News and Views, Chris writes:

"I help students to learn and love mathematics, achieve outstanding scores on standardized tests like the SAT1, SAT2, ACT, PSAT, SSAT, and HSPT, and maximize their effectiveness, productivity, and overall happiness in school.

Since 1978, it has been my privilege to serve as academic coach and mentor to more than a thousand private students of all ages and abilities, assisting them in reaching their personal best, achieving their educational goals, and finding enduring success as students and young people."

Chris is available to provide academic coaching for individuals and small groups, independent study support, workshops and courses, and consulting for parents, teachers, and other private practice educators. Maintaining Borland Educational offices in Sausalito and Santa Rosa, California, Chris also works with his students in their homes in San Francisco, Marin, and Sonoma County, at school, and over the phone, and is available to travel throughout California, the United States, and internationally by special arrangement.

His interests include: visiting the in-laws in Bali, Japanese samurai movies and Indian "Bollywood" films, service in the community, camping and hiking, comedy, art, philosophy/psychology/theology, Macs, music, recreational mathematics, and especially his family (wife Komang and daughter Lili).
